Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The song I chose was “I need you” by the artist Jamzy. The genre of the music was hip hop. Hip hop is a genre that is similar to rap music, hip hop emerged in the 1920’s and became widely popular in the 1990’s and to the time now. The music video uses many typical conventions of a real media product. When looking at Goodwin’s points, my video relates to the points well. A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics. In almost all music videos it is important that the song relates back to the video, in the lyrics of “I need you”, the lyrics directly come back to the video talking about the girl and goes into a memory.
The Digi pack cover and magazine I created goes quite well with the conventions of other media products. The layout of my digi pack is similar to other media products have the common features such as information on the artists list of the songs for the CD, which makes the digi pack display as a professional magazine or CD cover. The colour themes in both the digi pack and magazine advert is a typical colour range in our genres conventions as the colours are natural in the magazine and simple in the CD cover giving it specifically to target audience of the hip hop genre.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?

The combination of my main product and the ancillary task have been effective, I feel that the digi pack and the magazine relate to the video, both covers of the magazine and the CD cover are placed in the same area. the magazine also provides a genre related style of hip hop, also the magazine provides an intertextual reference to the song but also using magazine to make it look like a professional hip hop magazine. The costume, colours, font style hint the genre of the video making people who have an interest in indie/rock music have an interest in our video by the choices we have used in our magazine advert and digi pack. The font styles we have used on the digi pack and magazine advert are bold, solid and don’t have a fussy style. This style allows people to realise the genre as the fonts reinforce the kind of music the video represents.

What have you learned from audience feedback?

After creating a rough draft of the video and showing my peers, they had helped hugely to see what I can improve and add to see what people would want and expect from the video. Since the first draft of the video I had changed some aspects of the video due my peer’s feedback.
From the audience’s feedback I had found that majority had really enjoyed watching the video, majority had liked the fade transition and the fade of two scenes. So I had added a few more of the fade transitions. I felt that I had accomplished the main goal that I was aiming to achieve by making the video original and from the feedback that I had been given from my peers and some audience members telling me that it is.
Audiences who have seen the video have said, the video is good, looks like an original video and even though the finished video was good, I still would need to change a few minor problems to make the video better. From my peers who have seen the video they have said that the video would need a bit more improvements, I feel that the video overall is good if I had more time I would have added more scenes and spent a little more time trying to sort out the problem with the software that kept making the video slow down to the song.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluating stages?

The internet helped me thoroughly in my research stage, I used several different links like you tube to look at different songs from the same genre and see the different conventions they used, also to view Jamzy’s other songs to see the style he uses so we can develop that into my work. I also used the internet to look at previous years blogs to see how they presented their work and which element they used, I found it useful to analyse their work so would include everything in ours. The planning stage helped us in the long term as i followed the plans and referred back to the plans and timeline. To help me plan effectively I created a call sheet and a time line, I uploaded all of these onto the blogs and throughout the filming period I always tried referring back to them and expand on the ideas and change some ideas around a bit. For the construction of the music video and ancillary tasks I used Photoshop7. The music video was done on final cut and our video consisted of a lot of effects and transitions. I was creative in my thoughts and wanted to be unique in the way we represented our video. If I had more time I think the colour filter should’ve been done more precisely. We used the reverse shot which I thought was successful as it looked unique and worked well with the narrative. Sony Vegas pro allowed us to synchronise the music well and fit in with the lip synching and made the video look effective. Overall in our music video I think most of the effects and transitions worked well. Another media technology I used was Photoshop for our ancillary tasks. I explored Photoshop, and developed my skills and learnt new tools, I learnt how to change the background colours of images using the magic wand and the filters. I also developed some basic skills of organising the layers and the font styles. I got used to the way Photoshop works, and thought my products looked professional however if I did have more time I could have improved a lot more and focused on each part and made it look more successful.

Star analysis

Through out the project I had used a few musicians to influence the work, the music video below is by the artist known as Avery Storm featuring Rick Ross and the song is called "Not like my girl". The song involves a person singing about his girlfriend, and how other girls cant be compared to other girls. My video is lyrically similar to this video.

The music video has stopped being streamed on YouTube, however I have uploaded the song onto my blog.

another musician is Ne-yo and the song "Do you."

This music video is similar to our choice of music and to the issue that is in the music video. The similarity of the video is that both videos are about the memories of the women they loved and reminiscing about their relationship.

Goodwin's theory applied to my video

Genre-related style and iconography present. With every music video the audience can usually tell what genre it is by the clothes that the artist are wearing, another way that the audience can tell is by the music itself. With this music video audience can tell that the genre of this music video is rap.

A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics. In almost all music videos it is important that the song relates back to the video, in the lyrics of i need you, the lyrics directly come back to the video talking about the girl and goes into a memory.

.
A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music. The sound of the song and the effect is has on the listener should definitely be reflected in music videos. For instance a fast paced song should have a fast cutting rate and a slower song should have the opposite effect. An example of this is in the chorus of my video when the singer is on the phone and then it goes to a slow transition of the girl on the phone as well.

Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist. With most music videos there tends to be a lot of close ups of the artists, in my music video there are multiple close ups of the artist and the singer through out the video.

Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females. In most rap videos women are usually represented sexually in videos the girls either half naked and are used as sexual references, in my music video this is not used, because of the fact the female present is missed in the video.

Intertextual references to other media texts may be present. However in my music video I believe that there are known, because I did not think to put any reference to another song or object that relates to another artist or the artist himself, even though we had put a short piece of another song which belongs to the artist it does not show media text.
As Goodwin stated that in all music videos the majority of the factors can be found, my music video is a perfect example of that, having the majority of the factors with a few missing.

The BBFC

The British board of film classification also known as the BBFC is a highly expert and experienced regulator of the moving image (especially film, video/DVD and video games), and also a service provider for new and developing media.Through the efficient classification of the moving image into advisory and age-related categories, the provision of consumer advice and the maintenance of their archives. The BBFC give the public information that empowers them to make appropriate viewing decisions for themselves and those in their care. We help to protect vulnerable viewers and society from the effects of viewing potentially harmful or unsuitable content while respecting adult freedom of choice.

the universal label shows that all ages can watch the films with this label on it, there is nothing unsuitable for children.

This label is similar to the universal guidance label, but just some scenes of films may not be appropriate for children under eight.

Nobody younger than 12 can rent or buy a 12-rated DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game. Films in this category may include infrequent drugs, infrequent use of strong language, brief nudity, discreet sexual activity, and moderate violence.

Nobody younger than 15 can rent or buy a 15-rated DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category can contain adult themes, hard drugs, strong words, moderate-strong violence/sex references, and mild non-detailed sex activity.

Nobody younger than 18 can rent or buy an 18-rated DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category do not have limitation on the bad language that is used. Hard drugs are generally allowed, and strong violence/sex references along with non-detailed sex activity is also allowed.

The reason for giving information on the BBFC is because they play a major part in the media world. In 1988, Trading Standards Officers were given the power to seize illegal video works. More recently this has included DVDs, Blu-rays and video games. The BBFC can provide evidence to help Local Authority Trading Standards Officers and the Police secure convictions under the terms of the Video Recordings Act (VRA) 1984.

Also in the music industry if the music video is scene as violent then normal, sexual or nudity, the music channels broadcast the videos at a later night. With my video I believe that the certificate my video will be placed under would be a universal, because there is no scenes of violence or sexual nature, and nothing to upset children who would want to watch music videos.

Goodwin's theory on music analysis

Goodwin has identified a number of key features that are in music videos.
the features include:
- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

Goodwin says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the music plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists give them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to male audience, whilst intertextuality is often used in humorous videos.

Most of these features are present in all music videos, depending on the genre of the song and the aim of the record company or artist.

final cut version

the reason for editing the music video again is because of the one scene in the chorus that keeps on jumping,so with a bit of time and thought I had thought of a way to solve this issue. The way that I had solved the problem was by adding the same clip so that scene fades into the same clip.

last draft

In this draft I have done all the editing, fixed the fade of the characters, but I still need to fix the jump in one scene of the chorus, unless it is the footage, but I will try to edit the footage.

second version

With this version I have added a few background clips to the black screens when it is the artist. The idea of having a background clip playing is a good idea but, I have to edit that specific scene because the artist is in a solid form, which does not let the audience see the other two characters properly. I still need to edit the second chorus so that it does not jump, and possibly fade out the artist and me when it is green screened.

draft of music video

This is my first draft of my music video, there are still a few things that I need to edit on in the video, one change is when the artist is in a black background, there are many scenes with the green screen blacked out. I will need to add something to the background of those scenes, I could add another clip to grab the attention more. Another issue is in one of the chorus scenes I jump in the scene when it should run smoothly I will have to edit that bit to make it run a lot smoother. other then that I feel that the music video looks good and I am happy with the filming.

Final version of magazine cover

This is the version that I have finished and liked because the cover looks like a proper magazine cover. I had created this in Photoshop using an image that me and the artist had taken, and taking the label from another place and editing the label so it does not look unprofessional. Comparing the cover I have created to the actual cover of The Source there are some differences, one example is the content of text my cover has fewer content but I feel that it does not need as much content of the cover.

Draft example of magazine cover

This is the first draft of my magazine cover, this is one idea of which i would create the magazine by using another online programme that lets me create a magazine cover, but the flaw in this draft is that the image is strecthed, the images are not the same contrast and it does not look like a professional magazine more of a cartoon text to it, another problem is that the website name is at the bottom and covers some of the image. I will probably create the cover of the magazine using Photoshop, the reason for this is because I know how to use photoshop and it will be easier creating a magazine cover from scratch, rather than taking a pre made cover and jus adding the image which will sometimes stretch the image to fit it in.

magazine

I have taken four magazine covers that are well known in the music industry. With most of the magazine covers there is a lot of writing covering the actual image of the magazine. I will be basing my ideas on how to create a design for my magazine.

comparing hip hop connections and the Source to Vibe and RWD magazine there is a very big difference in content on the cover, and the colour scheme of all four magazine is a two tone colour which goes well together. For my magazine cover I will use the idea of using two tone colour but probably will not use as much content as the Source and hip hop magazine.

story board

This is what I am hoping to follow, this is a basic plan of the music video, these are just the main scenes that I could draw to my ability. I will be sticking to this plan as much as I can.

the final copy of album cover

This album cover is similar to the R&B covers especially the Lil Wayne album cover. By placing the image in Adobe photoshop it made it easy to edit the image into black and white with coloured text. I have created to the album to look more like the album cover of lil Wayne's The Carter 2. The whole album is black and white, the text however is in colour, this puts more attention and emotion to the cover.

Half term filming

Through out the week I have been filming and today hopefully I will have all the scenes that I need and will be editing the whole music video. Even though I have been filming I have also edited some of the scenes along the way so I clear idea idea on what I need to change on the scenes.

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

introduction of music video

I have filmed the introduction and I have been testing some transitions, video effects, like colour correction adding word effects, the word effect is basically another effect that allows the user to put any word in the video. With this effect I have just been experimenting ways in which I can place my name and the artist's name in the background and changing the colour of the actual footage.

First draft for the digi pack

Today I have been editing photos for the digi pack, for the digi pack I will be creating a magazine cover and a album cover. So far i have taken two separate pictures of me and the artist,I have been editing the images on adobe photo shop. The only issue is that both images are in different lighting so I will need to change the contrast or lighting of one image to be the same as the other image so it will look the same.

This is what I have got so far for either the album cover or the magazine cover, the only problem with this is that there is no background to the image, I could either have a white background with another graphic image. With this image I have taken one image and moved it with another and cleared the background so it has become a plain white background, i still feel that there can be room for improvement because so far it just looks to plain.

filming the chorus

For the past week we have filmed the chorus of the song I have filmed two scenes in different locations of for the chorus, I still need to film some more locations and camera shots. The camera shots I have taken so far within the chorus is mid shots, close ups two shot and long shots.

Wednesday, 6 October 2010

Intro of music video

Yesterday I finished filming the introduction of the music video, now I need to start editing the introduction with transitions, now on Thursday I will be filming the main part of the song. I will also take some photos for the the magazine cover and CD cover.

Monday, 4 October 2010

call sheet

director: Ruhul Islam
Actors: Ruhul Islam, Jamir Ali, Faisal Ahmed
extras
editing: done by me
costume: casual clothing, jeans, t-shirt, trainers and jacket.
props: none at the moment

example of album covers

these are some ideas of which could be used to design the album cover, each design is different but still represents the genre and background of the artist. An example of this is the album cover of T.I vs T.I.P, the artist is in a suit behind a desk with his feet up and having a drink in one hand showing the "gangster side" of the character. This album cover in particular gives a different way of thinking about the artist, which I may use this idea in creating the CD cover.

Weekend filming

Saturday I had a practice filming checking the different camera angles and shots. Sunday I did not get a chance to film because of the weather, so I have to consider some different locations for the changes in weather, need to think about having some scenes inside.

I will be filming tommorrow and hopefully finish the introduction to the music video tommorrow.

Friday, 1 October 2010

plan

Saturday and Sunday I will be filming the introduction scene which is roughly fourteen seconds, main bit of the song and the last few scenes of the video. After the filiming I will be designing the magazine cover and CD cover, the magazine design and CD covers first draft will hopefully be done by the end of the weekend.
This still image of one location will be used as an establishing shot of one of the characters, from the the establishing the camera will go into either a long shot or a mid shot.

chosen song

This is a link to the song that I will be filming to.The reason of choosing this song to make a music video is because it is an unsigned artist who has created the song. Another reason for choosing the song is, I am creating the scenes for the video, by doing this I will not have to follow a structure that has been made for a song from a signed band and I would not have to worry about any copy right procedures. I will be doing three minutes and tweleve seconds of the song which is leaving thirty seconds of the song left out which is another artist's verse, the reason for not doing that section of the song is because I could not get hold of the artist, I will not be filming the whole song I will be filming three minutes and twelve seconds

locations

This is one of the loctions that I will be recording some of the scenes, this place is good for the introduction of the video and an isolated scene,

action plan

start filming this Saturday and Sunday

finish filming by the end of October possibly the beginning of November

editing scenes start straight after all the filming is done

finish the editing by the end of November or mid November

have the music video finished by the end of December or mid December

unsigned artist

the reason that the artist has to be unsigned is because it would be easier to make a video to the music without it being copyrighted.

the unsigned artist that I will make a video for is called Jamzy, the song that I have chosen is called I need you featuring SluFais. One of the reasons for choosing a unsigned artist and one of their singles without a video towards it is so that it can be original and have my own ideas put into the video instead of following a the same video
